A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
